Time to turn clocks forward

It's time to turn the clocks forward.

Daylight saving time began at 2 a.m. Sunday, so clocks should be set an hour later today if you haven't already done so. The United States -- with a few local exceptions -- loses an hour so that there is more daylight in the afternoon and evening.

Daylight saving time lasts until Nov. 7 this year.

The move is thought to save energy because it allows for less use of electricity for lighting.
Used during World War I and World War II, daylight saving time was established nationally in 1966, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory.

Many clocks on Web sites, including ChicagoBreakingNews.com, synchronize with the time of the computer on which they are viewed. So if you're seeing the wrong time on this or other sites, check the time on your computer.

Maywood firefighters rescued a boy from the lone apartment in a late-1800s building during an extra-alarm fire in the west suburb overnight.

The fire at 20 N. 5th Avenue caused extensive damage to the 3-story building, which housed a thrift shop, a dance studio and the apartment, which was located at the back of the building's second floor, said Maywood Fire Chief John Cadagin.

The fire began about 11:30 p.m. Friday night, and fire officials were alerted to the blaze by an automatic fire alarm at the building, Cadagin said.

St. Patrick's Day Parade brings green to misty day

At the downtown St. Patrick's Day parade along Columbus Drive, revelers wore green top hats, raincoats and plastic ponchos as the Rev. John Trout, a Roman Catholic priest from Ireland who serves at a Buffalo Grove parish, fielded prayer requests to "send the rain back to Ireland."

The persistent 38-degree drizzle failed to keep the parade route from coming alive for three hours. Irish dancers kicked up their heels. Men in kilts blasted their bagpipes. An...
